Haute Couture Fashion Week: Schiaparelli, the power of fashion

Haute couture dresses and silhouettes are handmade and made to measure for the client, and differ in this from ready-to-wear, which is produced in larger series and in standard sizes. In recent years, however, the couture we see on the catwalks in Paris has moved ever closer to ready-to-wear, with one French fashion house going so far as to incorporate jeans into its haute couture show the last season.

Fortunately, we can count on British designer Daniel Roseberry to continue to bet on creativity and craftsmanship for Schiaparelli, the two main pillars of haute couture. The 32 silhouettes he presented today in Paris are a reminder of the vital importance of couture in an industry where commercial interest is increasingly taking precedence over the dreamlike aspect. A real breath of fresh air!

Daniel Roseberry and the power of couture

In 2019, Daniel Roseberry becomes artistic director of Schiaparelli. And although the pandemic has also hit the fashion and luxury industries, the Brit has managed to remind us over and over again what makes Schiaparelli unique. Namely an imaginary universe, a sharp vision of femininity and a particular attention to detail. The Schiaparelli woman, as Elsa Schiaparelli conceived her, remains a rebel for whom fashion is synonymous with pleasure, a way of standing out.

“I draw to make people feel things. When the clothes, the craftsmanship, the hairstyle, the music and the person wearing them come together in perfect harmony, when they join forces to try to communicate a message, then we can remember why we love fashion, why I love fashion. It's not for celebrities. It's not for the likes. Not even for the critics. It's simply because, when done well, fashion has something to say to us, it can help us express something inarticulate within ourselves. It's because it still has the power to move us,” Daniel Roseberry said in a press release about the show.

Schiaparelli SS22 haute couture

Schiaparelli's spring-summer 2022 haute couture collection confirms this vision. Demanding pieces with extravagant accessories, trompe-l'oeil jewelry or objects referring to nature, such as golden palm trees on the shoulders of an embroidered jacket.

Our favorite looks? The corset-effect bustier with a hand-forged underwired neckline on a long skirt in flowing black jersey, slit at the back. Or the golden coat with a high collar, made up of sequins in a herringbone pattern. Without forgetting the hats which add an extra touch to the silhouettes.
