Fukushima: what happened ten years ago?

May 22, 1960, in Valvidia (Chile). This earthquake caused a tsunami causing the death of approximately 5,700 people in Chile, Hawaii and Japan. Its magnitude of 9.52 is the highest ever recorded.

March 27, 1964, off Alaska. A magnitude 9.3 earthquake off Alaska killed 119 people in the United States.

December 26, 2004, in Sumatra and the Indian Ocean. The earthquake occurred off the Indonesian island, with a magnitude of 9.1 to 9.3. The subsequent tsunami hit Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and western Thailand. At least 250,000 people are missing.

On March 11, 2011, on the Pacific coast of Tohoku (Japan). The epicenter of this magnitude 9.1 earthquake is located about 130 kilometers off the eastern coast, and is followed by a deadly tsunami: 22,500 dead or missing.

The 1976 earthquake in Tangshan (China), of magnitude 8.2, officially caused 242,419 deaths (three times more according to other sources).

On January 12, 2010, in Haiti, an earthquake of magnitude 7 and its aftershocks killed more than 200,000 people.
