Macron's style under the magnifying glass | The Press
Rarely has the style of a French president and first lady been so analysed. Each public appearance of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron is scrutinized by fashion lovers. But what about their looks? Experts speak out.
Emmanuel Macron's style? Modern, sober and elegant. After analysis, all the experts notice that there has been a change in his appearance from the moment he declared himself a candidate for the presidential election.
" He dressed in a very financial golden boy style with luxurious suits and a Windsor tie knot, a complex knot that refers to the world of finance ", notes journalist Gaëtane Morin, author of the book Le cloakroom des policies. The young politician therefore wanted to forget his image as an investment banker to become more accessible.
"For a long time, he wore Lagonda suits that cost just over 1,000 euros. Quality ready-to-wear, made in France. But as he moved to the forefront of the political scene, Macron surrounded himself with advisers who judged that these suits were too expensive and not modern enough," explains Marc Beaugé, Monsieur Style of the Quotidien program hosted by Yann Barthès on TF1. As a result, he now buys his costumes at Jonas et Cie rue d'Aboukir, in the 2th arrondissement at a reasonable price: 340-380 euros, depending on the material.
" And there was a Macron effect on sales, 30% more compared to last year ", says Marc Beaugé, who qualifies the French president's style of dress as " simple and functional ". At this price, according to him, it is the best option, but we cannot say that they are beautiful costumes, he underlines. “ The fabric is not of very high quality, as is the workmanship. It's the Volkswagen of suits. »
"But Macron is easy to dress, and these suits suit him well. They make great shoulders and they come out well on TV. In his mind, that's probably the main thing. »

The type of tie has also changed. " They are thinner, it's in the trends and it goes well with his silhouette", remarks Gaëtane Morin, who specifies that his favorite color is blue, but since he is president, he wears darker suits, always with a white shirt. “ It is to establish his authority, to show that he has taken a step forward and that he embodies the presidential function. It is the official dress. He is very attached to republican symbols ", believes Gaëtane Morin.
For Jamil Dakhlia, professor of information and communication sciences at the Sorbonne Nouvelle, this posture goes beyond clothing style. “ At the time of the Louvre ceremony, on the evening of the victory, it was striking to see how he literally and figuratively donned the habit of President of the Republic. Everyone commented on the slowness of his gait, his measured, calculated gestures, his straight gaze. We feel that he wants to forget his youth. »
A RELAXED FIRST LADY
As for Brigitte Macron, Nathalie Rozborski, director of the Nelly Rodi style cabinet, talks about a feminine, chic and very modern style in the embodiment of his status. " She shakes up the classic codes of the formal bourgeoisie ", she says. Designer Sophie Théallet totally agrees. “ She has a relaxed, unconventional side and takes full responsibility. She is accessible, radiant and she represents a woman of our time. It feels good ! exclaims the French designer whose creations Michelle Obama has worn on several occasions.
We notice that Brigitte Macron wears "slim" pants that emphasize her slender legs, well-cut jackets, heels and dresses above the knee, which some criticize her for.
“ Look at the photos of the NATO summit, says Jamil Dakhlia. She is the only one with a dress above the knee! Let's say it's unusual and surprising in this environment and these circumstances. She is faithful to her style and reflects the image of a dynamic and sparkling woman", observes the professor.
One thing is certain, Brigitte Macron is a woman who takes care of herself and who is very concerned about her appearance. "Perhaps it is to assume the gaze of society on her? asks author Gaëtane Morin. She mentions in passing a few errors of taste, her once vulgar side and her tan all year round which lacks naturalness.
ELEGANCE WELCOMED
Over the past year, Brigitte Macron has been working with Delphine Arnault, deputy general manager of Louis Vuitton, who advises her and lends her Louis Vuitton outfits. “ She has always been flirtatious. At one point she adopted a style that was perhaps a little too young, a very adolescent style. She corrected this defect and is now chic in Louis Vuitton. Even if it's sometimes a little ostentatious," said Marc Beaugé.
There were two events where Brigitte Macron's elegance was praised. On victory night, she appeared alongside her husband in a navy blue Louis Vuitton jacket with a silver collar. " This outfit caused a stir, and everyone wanted to know where it came from! “says Gaëtane Morin. Then on the day of the president's inauguration, she wore an irreproachable sky blue suit, matching heels, wearing a bun. An outfit signed once again by Louis Vuitton. "The first lady is traditionally the ambassador of French fashion and French know-how. It will have to open up to other creators, because they need this showcase," she continues.
THE BEAUTIFUL SEASON
Warning, summer is the season of all dangers for politicians. " Summer is not the season for elegance, there are always a lot of style mistakes ", remarks Marc Beaugé.
" It's hot, we're on vacation, we take out the wrong swimsuit, the wrong shorts, a polo shirt that's too tight. François Hollande was doing very badly, Emmanuel Macron has an easier body to dress. But still, you have to be careful. The wrong photo, with the wrong sandals, for example, arrived quickly... ”
