Ten French words you hear in South Korea
There is the age-old “baguette”, the classic “croissant”, and the traditional “rendez-vous”. In South Korea, French has its place in the public space. In Seoul, one can read at the bend of a street, on posters, shop fronts or clothes, words written in the language of Molière.
Since the country joined the International Organization of La Francophonie in 2016, as an observer state, the interest of the inhabitants for French has experienced a certain revival.

The French Embassy in South Korea stresses on its website that “the promotion of the French language and of the Francophonie is one of the priorities of the action plan for the global partnership of the 21st century between France and Korea.” As such, the country is ahead of Japan and China “in number of French learners in relation to the total population.”
It suffices to verify this by taking a look at the daily vocabulary of Koreans, of whom approximately 47,500 learn French.
