Disposable baby wipes and phenoxethanol

Phenoxyethanol is the most problematic substance of disposable baby wipes.Behind this somewhat barbaric name hides a preservative widely used in cosmetics, which prevents the development of bacteria in creams and other preparations. It is also found in baby wipes.

This curator, beyond a certain threshold, presents health risks: it is stored by the body and can have harmful effects on the kidneys and the liver. It is also an allergenic, who can be responsible for hives and eczema. To avoid this, its concentration is regulated and must not exceed 1 %.

However, since 2012, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) has requested a lower threshold for cosmetic products intended for the siege of babies, whether it be wipes or creams. The buttocks of children under 3 have often have micro-lensions which lead to a higher risk of absorption of phenoxethanol.According to the ANSM, the maximum concentration of 1 % is suitable for adults, but not to toddlers, for whom it recommends a maximum threshold of 0.4 % until the age of 3 years.

In addition, the ANSM points out that parents generally use several cosmetic products for babies. Most containing phenoxyethanol, and this being stored by the body, the total concentration is far too high.

However, the ANSM call has not been heard, and the maximum concentration rate is still set at 1 %, including in baby wipes and cosmetics.Only difference: since December 2019, products containing phenoxyethanol have the obligation to mention on their packaging that they should not be used to clean the buttocks of children under 3 years old.

Faced with this significant risk, it is more prudent to make natural and healthy baby cleaning wipes.

The impact of disposable environment wipes

Cleaning wipes, in addition to their controversial composition, represent a considerable source of pollution for the environment.Used only once, loaded with chemicals, they are neither recyclable nor biodegradable.

According to WWF, they generate 23 kg of waste per person per year, and are made up of 90 % plastic, generally polyester.Every second, 233 wipes are thrown in France. Some manufacturers mislead the consumer by mentioning on the packaging of the wipes that they are biodegradable in the water.Believing to do well, many people throw them into the toilet.

However, between the toilets and the treatment plant, the wipes absolutely do not have time to deteriorate, and therefore cause significant damage in the filtering stations, with costs sometimes reflected in the municipalities and their inhabitants.

Add to that the carbon impact linked to their manufacture, their transport, their storage, and you will probably agree that a use of a few seconds cannot compensate for the environmental consequences of these wipes.

What materials favor for the manufacture of baby washable cleaning wipes?

Baby washable wipes must have 3 main characteristics: they must be absorbent, soft, and dry quickly.

The three materials to favor are cotton, bamboo and tencel. Each has different properties that make them more suitable for specific uses.Opt if possible for organic and Oeko-Tex certified textiles, a label that guarantees an absence of harmful chemicals.

Cotton has the advantage of drying quickly. It is a little less absorbent than the other two materials, which makes it possible to put less product and obtain well impregnated wipes. It is the least soft of the three textiles mentioned. It is ideal for cleaning the stools because it cleanses effectively and can also be washed at high temperature, ideally at least 60 ° C.

Bamboo, or more exactly bamboo viscose, is very absorbent and very soft.It does not irritate the skin and is perfect for cleaning the urine and drying baby buttocks.

Finally, Tencel, also called Lyocell, is a fiber obtained from wood pulp.It can be eucalyptus, bamboo, pine or birch for example. It is the sweetest textile of the three, but it has a drawback: it cannot bear to be washed at high temperatures (no more than 40 ° C).It is therefore not ideal for cleaning baby's buttocks, but is completely suitable for cleaning the toddlers of toddlers.

How to make baby cleaning wipes?

You can sew very simple rectangular or square wipes, or opt for foldable wipes, with a small pocket to close the used wipes. This system is very practical for transport, when you are on the go for example.

To make these folding wipes, do this:

When the wipes are used, you just have to fold them in 3 and enter them in the small pocket to transport them safely!

It is recommended to wash the wipes 2 to 3 times before the first use, to increase their absorption power. You will need forty to be able to ensure a turnover, and you can easily wash them with the rest of your laundry, placing them in a net to protect them.

How to prepare baby's impregnated wipes?

You can use these wipes without impregnating them beforehand, simply adding the liniment when you clean the baby buttocks. But to save time, it is also possible to pre-impregnate your wipes with a house and natural solution.

You will need:

Hydrosol, or floral water, is the spring water used in the process of distillation of essential oils.It contains part of the plant molecules, but in much lower quantities. The hydrosol can therefore be used without risk on the skin of toddlers. Some hydrosols are more particularly suitable for babies, such as millefeuille Achillae for atopic and very sensitive skin, orange blossom hydrosol or Roman chamomile hydrosol for dry skin.

  1. Préparez un verre et un contenant hermétique.

You thus have washable, reusable, practical, ecological and healthy wipes for babies.
