Pediatric cancers in Loire-Atlantique: parents demand concrete measures

In an online exchange on the internet, Wednesday September 15, organized by the Health Environment Network and which brought together collectives, associations, scientists and politicians, the collective Stop aux cancers de nos enfants (SCE) reiterated the urgency of research at lead around the causes of pediatric cancers as well as their prevention.

“Since 2015, 25 children have declared cancer within a radius of 15 km around Sainte-Pazanne, recalled Marie Thibaud , from the SCE collective. Seven children died . The priority is that no child has to fight against this injustice. The alert is essential and the failures to alert are too heavy with consequences. Without figures, no alert. »

And to ask, once again, for the public availability of the cartography of pediatric cancers and a census of cases "in the shortest possible time".

"More than 90% of childhood cancers are of environmental origin when they are not genetic," noted Marie Thibaud. INCa is working on clusters, we are told, but no progress has been made on this issue. Today, in France, no administration has the means to search. Yes for a “Zero exposure” plan at school and to help local communities, which are totally destitute. The proposals of the ten-year strategy against cancer are not enough. There must be a much greater ambition with a real search for the causes: the toxicity of our environment is no longer to be proven, but the cocktail effects, chronic toxicity and duration of exposure are not taken into account. »

Marie Thibaud reiterated her wish to see the creation of an environmental health observatory .

Long and complex

Professor Norbert Ifrah , President of the National Cancer Institute (INCa), insisted on the difficulties linked to research time.

He also mentioned some information on pathologies, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children: “The acquired anomaly is already present in the blood of the placenta. The causes are to be sought very early in the child's life. This is not fully understood on society. Research is long and benefits from the appearance of new, finer tools. There are 100,000 chemicals in Europe. For 500 of them, we have very good knowledge of exposures and effects, but for more than two-thirds of the products, we have no knowledge or information. Yes, start research, but don't expect action within two years . That said, we need immediate protective action, that's what we're focused on. We devote 8 to 10% of the research budget to pediatric cancers, but for the causes, a consortium is set up. »

But for Marie Thibaud, all this lacks speed: “For the moment, it does not work, we have to go there and build. I expect more concrete things. »
