Reconfinement: what are the products that you will no longer be able to buy in supermarkets?

France has just reconfigured itself, for a minimum period of one month. By December 1, the French are invited to stay at home and only go out to honor a few authorized obligations, provided with a derogatory exit certificate. Among these reasons are "purchases of first necessity in establishments whose activities remain authorized". Large surfaces therefore remain open since they are considered essential businesses (unlike hair salons or clothing stores), but not entirely. The Prime Minister announced the closure of certain departments, making many non-essential products unavailable for sale. The measure comes into force on Wednesday, November 4.

What products are affected?

In order to ensure fairness between large and small businesses, the government has announced the closure of several departments deemed non-essential in supermarkets. The products concerned by the measure, and which will no longer be authorized for sale, are the following:

The announcement of the closure of bookstores had provoked the ire of booksellers who had cried injustice and unfair competition. The reason ? The book shelves remained open in the supermarkets. It was in response to the clamor and to ease the tensions that they were ordered to close. Newspapers and magazines are always available. The other departments are added to the measure for the sake of fairness since clothing stores, household appliances and florists are closed until December 1. In this way, the government wants to prevent smaller businesses from feeling aggrieved. Since many jobs are threatened, a possibility of reopening in the coming weeks has been mentioned depending on the evolution of the health situation.

What can you always buy?

The exact terms of shelf closures in supermarkets were detailed in a decree published Tuesday morning, in order to clarify all gray areas. The departments that have formal authorization to remain open and continue to sell are: food, beverages (even alcoholic), hygiene products (excluding make-up), cleaning products, for babies, for animals, gardening equipment, automobiles, stationery, computers and hardware stores. Note that everything remains available for purchase online and that you can order in order to receive your products, even non-essential ones, directly at home.
