A coat of paint, yes, but the right amount for the right surface
Whether you want to give it a little paint or completely renovate your coatings, you have to ask yourself the right questions: how to calculate an area in m2 ? How many liters of paint per m 2 and how much paint in total?
How many liters of paint per m 2 to repaint? Our tips
Maintaining or refreshing a somewhat dull surface? Restore damaged or degraded walls? Completely rethink the decor? In any case, even before starting to paint the walls, time for reflection is never wasted.
Prepare your painting site well – paint quantity calculation
Among the preliminary questions:
These are all questions that will determine the success of the operation and also its cost, starting with the quantity of paint and other ingredients needed if necessary (strippers, cleaners, fillers, undercoats, etc.) without forgetting the time to plan for the construction site. A well-prepared wall will always make it possible to obtain a better effect with substantial savings on the quantity of paint. Even 3 layers will not be enough to hide a dirty or cracked wall!

How to calculate the area of a room to paint
The calculation of the surfaces in m 2 is the first essential step to build your budget. Examine all the sections of wall "to be treated" in order (4 for a rectangular room, more if there are recesses). For each of them, calculate:
Also assess the condition of the walls and the work to be planned (cleaning, plaster repairs, sanding, undercoat). Gather the necessary tools and supplies and schedule your jobs.
Paint quantity calculation: how many liters do I need?
Once the type of paint has been chosen, calculate how many liters you will need. To do this :
Using the manufacturer's instructions on the pot, calculate the yield, i.e. the number of m² covered by one liter of product. Example for a pot of 0.5 l for 3.5 m2: 3.5/0.5 = 7m2 / litre ). Calculate the gross quantity = surface to be painted / yield (57 m2 to be painted with paint 7 m 2 /liter: 57/7 = 8.14 liters.) Multiply by the number of layers (usually 2). Example 8.14 x 2 = 16.28 liters.
Provide a margin. An additional 10% is in principle sufficient except in the following cases: very porous wall, existing plaster with reliefs, thick roller, numerous cleanings of tools and containers, hot and dry weather, etc. Example: 16.28 + 10% = 17.91 litres. Proceed in the same way for any underlays.
Go to the purchase of paint: the paint is generally sold in pots of different capacities. If the capacities exist, 3 pots (10 l + 5 l + 3 l) will optimize the purchase for the 17.91 liters calculated.

Some tips to avoid wasting paint
Suppose the calculation results in a need of 5.5 liters and only 5 liter pots are available. Should we take 2 pots knowing that the second will barely be started? Several possibilities to avoid an unnecessary purchase of paint:
Give it a try with a single 5 liter container:
