Apocalypse: the doomsday clock leaves us only 3 minutes to live!

Those who have read Watchmen know it well (and this is not necessarily a good thing given its depressing connotation), the Clock of the Apocalypse is today once again under the limelight much to our dismay. Indeed, after one of the most impressive variations since 1991 (we were then at the lowest since its creation, that is to say 23:43), it then fell to 23:55 in 2012 to reach 23 today :57, or 3 minutes before the supposed end of the world. That's all well and good, but what is the Apocalypse Clock?Apocalypse: The Doomsday Clock gives us only 3 minutes left to live!Apocalypse: The Doomsday Clock gives us only 3 minutes to live!

The cogs of the Doomsday Clock

The Doomsday / Doomsday Clock is a concept created in 1947, at the dawn of the Cold War USA/ USSR, by the editors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists of the University of Chicago. On this clock, midnight corresponds to the Apocalypse. Of course, it's not a real clock, it's an analogy using the clock to show that humanity is (happily) running towards its loss, both in terms of nuclear and ecological dangers (since 2007) and

Since its creation, this clock has been moved forward or backward no less than 18 times (and the trend is rather forward, not surprisingly). This is how today we go from 23:55 to 23:57! For what ? Because scientists believe that even if the efforts for the environment are great, they are largely insufficient. Moreover, the USA and Russia have decided to modernize their nuclear armament, which means that the treaties on nuclear weapons are no longer valid, and we do not even talk about the conflict with North Korea which seems imminent...

Even if we can consider ourselves lucky that it is not yet at 23:59, it is still quite alarming to see that it has been advanced by 2 minutes in one fell swoop in just 3 years. In any case, let's hope that we won't be subject to an explosion like the one in New York in Alan Moore's famous Graphic Novel...
