Ephemeris of November 10: inauguration of the current Lighthouse of Matane in 1907
On November 10, 1907, there was inauguration of the new Lighthouse of Matane whose start of construction dates back to 1906 by the Steel Concrete Compagny. When it was put into service, the fire of the old lighthouse is turned off.
The old installations will not be demolished immediately. They will still serve for a few years of residence for the goalkeeper and his family.
In 1910, the federal government granted a contract to A.Vézina of $ 4,570.21 for the construction of a wooden dwelling for the goalkeeper.
The installations will be abandoned on June 21, 1951 while the Ministry of Transport develops a lighting system on the Breeze-Lames, which no longer requires the permanent presence of a goalkeeper and, therefore, all the equipment of the lighthouse.
A wise choice: reinforced concrete
Located on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence Estuary west of Matane, the lighthouse is surmounted by a glass lantern, itself overseen with a steel dome with Le Girouette. At the top, a concrete gallery measuring 30 inches of width belt the lantern.
This lighthouse is one of the rare copies with a completely cylindrical shape with a height of 67 feet and in good condition.
It was not until 1906 that the Ministry of Navy and Fisheries began to use reinforced concrete for the construction of headlights, including that of Matane.
The use of reinforced concrete as the main material is a wise choice since this new material already displays the qualities of solidity, sustainability and low maintenance.
