If Paris has moved up three places in the rankings in the space of two years, it is overtaken this year by Tel Aviv, which occupies first place for the first time. The Israeli city jumped four places in 2021, linked to “the soaring price of the national currency and the rise in prices of about a tenth of the products studied, in particular groceries and transport“.
In the 2020 index, the largest price increases (in US dollars) were seen in Tehran, which rose from 106th to 79th place.
And this trend continues, as the Iranian capital fell from 79th to 29th place this year. When it comes to falling costs of living, Rome saw the most dramatic fall, falling from 32nd to 48th place, due to a “particularly steep decline in the price of the shopping cart means and clothes“.

As for the factors driving up the cost of living more generally, the study's authors state that "transportation saw the largest price increases, with index scores increasing on average by 3 .8 dots. The average cost of a liter of petrol (the key element in this category) soared by 21%, although prices for public transport remained more stable“.
